Requisite: English Composition 3 or 3H. Development of all literature in Afrikaans, with special attention to authors and poets who protested apartheid -- Brink, Breytenbach, Van Heerden, Jonker, Joubert, Krige, Krog, Leroux, Rabie, Small, and Willemse. Additional readings by Coetzee, De Lange, Krog, and others on censorship, imprisonment, South African history, and postcolonial literary theory. P/NP or letter grading.
